The Quartier Habous is defined by its whitewashed archways and narrow, orderly streets that create the impression of a traditional Moroccan medina built with modern precision. Often called the New Medina, this district emerged during the French protectorate in the nineteen twenties and thirties as an organized response to Casablanca’s rapid population growth. While the old medina was becoming overcrowded, the colonial administration sought to house Moroccan merchant families in a space that combined local aesthetic traditions with European urban planning.
