You can identify Al Alam Palace by the two rows of towering, highly polished columns at its entrance, painted in vibrant turquoise blue and gold. These flared pillars support a flat, square roof and stand out against the white government buildings surrounding the plaza. The palace, whose name translates to The Flag Palace, sits in Old Muscat on the site of a royal residence that dates back to the early nineteenth century.
