The Great Gate of Sur al-Lawatiya stands on the Muttrah Corniche, marking the entrance to a centuries-old walled enclave. This gate is the primary access point to a historic neighborhood known as Sur al-Lawatiya, a dense, rectangular district containing several hundred homes. The enclave has long been home to the Al-Lawatiya community, a prominent merchant tribe that settled in Muscat between the late eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries.
