Cmentarz Żołnierzy Wojska Polskiego na Westerplatte

historic

The Cmentarz Żołnierzy Wojska Polskiego, or the Polish Soldiers' Cemetery, sits directly upon the ruins of Guardhouse Number Five. This location marks the spot where many Polish defenders perished during the German assault on the Military Transit Depot in September nineteen thirty-nine. You can identify the site by its formal, orthogonal layout, which serves as a quiet contrast to the nearby, more prominent monument. The cemetery was first established in July nineteen forty-six at the request of Captain Franciszek Dąbrowski, the former deputy commander who led the garrison through its seven-day defense.
