The Escadas do Caminho Novo are a narrow, steep stone stairway that runs directly alongside a significant section of the medieval Muralha Fernandina, or Fernandine Wall. This fortification, which once defined the limits of Porto, was constructed between thirteen sixty-eight and fourteen thirty-seven to replace an earlier, smaller defensive perimeter. The wall was financed by a tax on wine transfers, reaching roughly three thousand paces in length and thirty feet in height to protect the growing city with battlements, towers, and bastions.
