Fort San Domingo is a square, two-story red-brick fortress overlooking the Tamsui River. Its thick walls and prominent position on a hill have made it a focal point for foreign powers in Taiwan for nearly four hundred years. Originally established by the Spanish in sixteen twenty-eight, the site was later rebuilt by the Dutch in sixteen forty-four. Local residents nicknamed the structure Ang Moo Siann, or Red Hair Fortress, a reference to the appearance of its Dutch occupants.
