The octagonal tower at Tamkang Senior High School, built in nineteen twenty-three, stands out for its blend of Western design and local brickwork. This school traces its origins to the nineteenth century, when the Canadian missionary George Leslie Mackay established a tradition of education in Tamsui. In nineteen fourteen, his son George William Mackay founded what became the present institution, which later merged with a neighboring girls' school in nineteen fifty-six.
