St Domingo House takes its name from a grand eighteenth-century mansion that once stood in this part of Everton. The original estate was built in the seventeen fifties by George Campbell, a merchant and sugar trader who served as the Mayor of Liverpool. Campbell named his home after a ship he captured from the island of Saint Domingo in the West Indies, an event he commemorated by styling his residence after that distant territory.
