St George’s Church

St George’s Church in Everton is defined by an unusual internal skeleton: though its outer walls are built from traditional stone, the entire interior structure—including the vaulting ribs and columns—is made of cast iron. Consecrated in eighteen fourteen, the building was the result of a partnership between the architect Thomas Rickman and the local ironmaster John Cragg. Cragg, who owned the nearby Mersey Iron Foundry, used his facility to prefabricate the delicate Gothic-style components, which were then transported to the site and bolted together.
