Senate House rises above the Bloomsbury skyline as an eighteen-story tower of Portland stone and brick, its massive form tapering like a pyramid. Designed by architect Charles Holden and completed in nineteen thirty-six, the building served as the new headquarters for the University of London. At the time of its construction, it reached a height of two hundred and ten feet, making it the tallest secular building in the capital after Saint Paul's Cathedral.
