St Pancras International is unmistakable for its soaring red-brick clock tower and elaborate Victorian Gothic facade. Opened in eighteen sixty-eight, the station was designed by engineer William Henry Barlow and architect George Gilbert Scott to serve as the London terminus for the Midland Railway. Its train shed was once the largest single-span roof in the world, sheltering platforms elevated five meters above the ground to accommodate an undercroft filled with beer barrels from Burton-on-Trent.
