Tavistock Square Gardens

Tavistock Square Gardens is recognizable by the bronze figure of Mahatma Gandhi that stands in its center. Developed in the eighteen twenties on the Bedford Estate, the square is defined by its collection of memorials dedicated to peace and human rights. Beyond the statue of Gandhi, unveiled in nineteen sixty-eight, the grounds contain a cherry tree planted to remember the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a stone commemorating conscientious objectors, and a bust of the writer Virginia Woolf, who lived in a house on this square from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen thirty-nine.
