Dr Johnson's House

Dr Johnson's House at seventeen Gough Square stands out as a rare survivor of seventeenth-century domestic architecture in the City of London. This five-story Queen Anne townhouse is identified by its brick facade, central spiral staircase, and the original anti-burglary iron chain and latch still attached to its front door. Built by wool merchant Richard Gough around seventeen hundred, it is the only one of the eighteen residences Samuel Johnson occupied in the City that remains standing today.
