Borough Market is recognizable by the heavy iron-and-glass roof structures that shelter rows of stalls beneath towering Victorian railway viaducts. Its history stretches back nearly one thousand years to the southern end of London Bridge, where traders once gathered to sell grain, fish, and cattle to travelers entering the city. Over centuries, the market grew so congested on the main thoroughfare that it caused frequent, chaotic traffic jams, eventually leading local residents to raise six thousand pounds in seventeen fifty-six to purchase a dedicated site known as The Triangle.
