The Royal Exchange is identified by the massive, eight-column portico at its entrance, modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. Established in fifteen seventy-one by Sir Thomas Gresham, the building served as London's first purpose-built center for trade. Queen Elizabeth the First granted the site its royal title and a license to sell alcohol, and the upper floors were famously lined with retail shops, making it an early predecessor to the modern shopping mall.
