The Fitzroy Tavern, located on Charlotte Street, is identifiable by its dark wood exterior and the wrought-iron signage hanging above the entrance. Originally constructed in eighteen eighty-three as the Fitzroy Coffee House, the building was converted into a pub in eighteen eighty-seven. By nineteen nineteen, the licensee Judah Kleinfeld renamed it the Fitzroy Tavern, a name chosen during a time when the previous title, the Hundred Marks, carried unpopular Germanic associations.
