cultural

The building is identified by a frontage of Grimshill and Portland stone, four storeys high, featuring a distinct open loggia with Ionic columns at the first-floor level. Originally opening on September tenth, eighteen ninety-two, as the Trafalgar Square Theatre, it was the first playhouse constructed on St Martin’s Lane. Architect Walter Emden designed the venue for the acting couple Frank Wyatt and Violet Melnotte. By eighteen ninety-five, the owners renamed it the Duke of York’s Theatre to honor the future King George the Fifth.
