Marlborough House

Marlborough House is a long, low-slung mansion built of red Dutch brick that stands on the corner of The Mall and Marlborough Road. Completed in seventeen eleven for Sarah Churchill, the first Duchess of Marlborough, it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and his son to be a residence that was strong, plain, and convenient. The red bricks used in its walls were brought to London as ballast in the very ships that had transported soldiers for the Duke of Marlborough’s army in Holland.
