Queen's House

museum

The Queen’s House is a bright white villa that stands apart from the surrounding architecture. Completed in sixteen thirty-five, it is the earliest example of classical architecture in Britain, designed by Inigo Jones after he returned from his studies of Italian Renaissance buildings. The structure was originally commissioned by Queen Anne of Denmark, who wanted a private retreat on the grounds of the former Greenwich Palace. According to local legend, the King granted the land for the house as an apology after he lost his temper when the Queen accidentally shot one of his favorite hunting dogs.
