Greenwich Foot Tunnel South

historic

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel is defined by the glazed, glass-topped circular dome that marks its southern entrance near the riverfront. Opened in nineteen oh two, this subterranean passage was engineered by Sir Alexander Binnie to replace an unreliable ferry service that frequently left dockworkers stranded on the wrong side of the Thames. It stretches over twelve hundred feet beneath the riverbed, descending fifty feet to connect the town of Greenwich with the Isle of Dogs.
