BFI Southbank is tucked beneath the massive concrete arches of the southern end of Waterloo Bridge. It serves as the leading repertory cinema in the United Kingdom, housing four screens that show a revolving selection of classic, independent, and international films. Originally opened in nineteen fifty-one as the National Film Theatre for the Festival of Britain, the institution moved to its permanent site under the bridge in nineteen fifty-seven.
