The Looff Hippodrome is a large, oval-shaped structure built in nineteen sixteen, easily spotted by its eclectic blend of architectural styles including Byzantine, Moorish, and various decorative turrets. Designed by master carousel builder Charles I.D. Looff, the building was intended to serve as a centerpiece for his Pleasure Pier, housing merry-go-rounds, swing rides, and even a dance hall inside its two-story wooden frame. It remains one of the few surviving examples of the grand seaside amusement structures that once dominated the California coast.
