Memorial Hall rises above its neighbors with a towering, ornate silhouette of red brick, steep multi-colored tiled roofs, and sharp, pointed arches. Built between eighteen seventy and eighteen seventy-eight, this High Victorian Gothic structure occupies the site once known as the Delta, a former playing field. It emerged from an alumni-led fundraising effort to commemorate Harvard students and affiliates who died while fighting for the Union cause in the American Civil War.
