Salem Gunpowder Raid

The North Bridge in Salem is marked by a history of defiance that nearly ignited the American Revolution nearly two months before the battles at Lexington and Concord. On the afternoon of February twenty-sixth, seventeen seventy-five, three hundred British regulars under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Leslie marched toward this crossing. They carried orders to seize cannons and military supplies hidden in the North Fields by colonial militia.
