Basilica of the Holy Blood

The Basilica of the Holy Blood is recognized by its layered design, featuring a dark, Romanesque lower chapel dedicated to Saint Basil and a decorative Gothic upper chapel. Built between eleven thirty-four and eleven fifty-seven, it originally served as the private chapel for the Count of Flanders. The building is home to a crystal vial believed by tradition to contain a cloth stained with the blood of Jesus Christ, which was supposedly collected by Joseph of Arimathea.
