Dijver

The Dijver is a canal and a street in the heart of Bruges, defined by its reflective, willow-shaded water and a series of historic gabled buildings. This waterway traces part of the city’s first defensive walls, dating back to at least eleven twenty-seven. Its name, the oldest toponym in Bruges, likely stems from the Celtic divara, meaning the divine or holy water, and long before the medieval city flourished, the land here served as a sacred site where people brought offerings to oak-covered islands.
