Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut

historic

The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is recognized by three wide, terraced limestone levels that rise directly against the sheer, golden-brown cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. Built in the fifteenth century before the common era for the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, the temple served as a site for ritual offerings and the posthumous worship of her spirit. It was designed by her steward and architect, Senenmut, who drew inspiration from the nearby temple of the earlier ruler Mentuhotep the Second.
