Valley of the Kings

landmark

The Valley of the Kings is a limestone wadi on the west bank of the Nile where over sixty royal tombs were carved directly into the rock. Towering over this desert landscape is a natural peak called Al Qurn, which ancient Egyptians viewed as a mountain-shaped pyramid, linking the site to themes of rebirth. Beginning around fifteen hundred and four BC with the reign of Thutmose the First, New Kingdom pharaohs shifted to this hidden necropolis to protect their remains from the looting that had plagued earlier pyramid burials.
