Parque Central is defined by the Fountain of the Sirens at its heart, an eighteenth-century stone centerpiece featuring four mermaids. Since the city of Santiago de los Caballeros was founded in fifteen forty-three, this plaza has been the official center of colonial life. It was here that Spanish authorities governed a territory stretching across much of Central America, and the surrounding square served as the site for public announcements, military drills by the royal guard, and the city market.
