Chickpet is a dense, labyrinthine district defined by its narrow, bustling lanes that have served as the city's primary commercial hub since the sixteenth century. Established by Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru, its name comes from the Kannada words "chick," meaning small, and "pete," meaning town. Despite the name, the area functions as a massive, continuous wholesale marketplace known for its concentration of silk saree shops, jewelry stores, and fabric merchants.
