St. Mary’s Church is the oldest surviving British building in India, distinguished by thick masonry walls and a curved roof originally engineered to be bombproof. Built between sixteen seventy-eight and sixteen eighty, this structure within Fort St. George was the first Anglican church constructed east of the Suez. Its roof design was so robust that during the eighteenth-century Carnatic Wars, the building was repurposed as a barracks and granary for the fort’s garrison.
