Fort St. George is defined by the massive white defensive walls that once protected the first British fortress in India, established in sixteen forty-four. This site served as the primary stronghold for the British East India Company and the nucleus from which the city of Chennai expanded. The fort complex contains several historic structures, including St. Mary’s Church, which has stood since sixteen eighty, and the Fort Museum, housed in a building originally constructed in seventeen ninety-five for the Madras Bank.
