St. John's College sits on a broad campus featuring buildings constructed in red sandstone with Indo-Saracenic architectural elements. Established in eighteen fifty by the Church Missionary Society of England, it began under the guidance of its first principal, the Reverend Thomas Valpy French, a fellow of University College, Oxford. The institution has long maintained a broad academic scope, and in eighteen ninety-three, it became one of the earliest colleges in India to offer postgraduate degrees.
