The Hakone Sekisho is a reproduction of an Edo-period checkpoint, identified by its pair of six-meter-high wooden gates and the watchtower standing on the hill above. Established by the Tokugawa shogunate in sixteen nineteen, this site functioned as a strategic barrier on the Tokaido highway, which connected the capital of Edo to Kyoto. Because the geography of the Hakone mountains and Lake Ashi created a natural bottleneck, the shogunate placed this facility here to maintain control over the entire country.
