The bright red Heiwa-no-Torii, or Torii of Peace, rises directly from the waters of Lake Ashi. This large gate marks the lakeside entrance to the grounds of Hakone Shrine. It was built in nineteen fifty-two to commemorate the Treaty of San Francisco, which formally ended the Allied occupation of Japan and returned the nation to sovereignty following the Second World War.
