The indigo-blue facade of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is impossible to miss on Leith Street. Constructed between eighteen ninety-seven and nineteen oh four, this expansive residence was the home and business base of Cheong Fatt Tze, a Hakka merchant who rose from poverty in China to become a powerful industrialist known as the Rockefeller of the East. He designed the house to accommodate his extended family and his seventh wife, filling the thirty-eight rooms and five courtyards with materials imported from as far away as Scotland, including cast iron and stained glass.
