Swettenham Pier is distinguished by its long, T-shaped wharf extending into the Penang Strait at the northeastern tip of George Town. Completed in nineteen oh four, this structure was originally known as the Iron Pier and built to provide the deep-water docking that the city’s growing maritime trade desperately needed. It bears the name of Frank Athelstane Swettenham, who served as the governor of the Straits Settlements during the early twentieth century.
