Fort Manoel is a limestone star fort defined by four prominent pentagonal bastions named Saint Helen, Saint Anthony, Saint John, and Notre Dame. Built on Manoel Island between seventeen twenty-three and seventeen thirty-three, the structure was commissioned by the Portuguese Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena. His goal was to secure the western approach to Valletta and prevent enemy forces from using the island as a platform for artillery.
