The Grand Master's Palace occupies an entire block facing Saint George's Square, identified by its two-story limestone facade and a series of characteristic wooden balconies. Construction began in fifteen seventy-one under the direction of architect Girolamo Cassar, making it one of the first structures built in the new capital of Valletta. It served as the residence and administrative seat for the Grand Masters of the Knights Hospitaller until seventeen ninety-eight.
