Fort St Elmo occupies the northeastern tip of the Sciberras Peninsula, a star-shaped fortress defined by its thick limestone bastions and commanding position at the entrance to Valletta’s two harbors. Built by the Order of Saint John in fifteen fifty-two to guard these maritime approaches, the fort remains a physical record of the island's military past, housing stone granary lids in its courtyard and a chapel where defenders once fought to the death.
