St. George’s Square is defined by its expansive, level pavement set directly before the main façade of the Grandmaster’s Palace. Known to locals as Palace Square, this space was part of the original city plan drawn up in fifteen sixty-six when the Knights of Saint John first established Valletta. It functioned initially as a military parade ground where knights held drills and displayed their strength.
