Agnietenkapel

The Agnietenkapel is a fifteen-century Gothic chapel marked by an ornate, second-hand sandstone gate bearing the gold inscription Athenaeum Illustre and the three crosses of Amsterdam. Originally built in fourteen seventy as part of a Franciscan convent for women, the chapel sits on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal in an area once dominated by religious houses. When the city turned Protestant in fifteen seventy-eight, the building escaped demolition and was eventually repurposed.
