The Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski commands attention on the Reguliersbreestraat with its two ornate towers and a flamboyant facade that blends Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Amsterdam School styles. Opened on October twenty-eighth, nineteen twenty-one, the theater was the vision of Abraham Tuschinski, a Polish tailor who arrived in the Netherlands while en route to America and stayed to build a cinema empire. He spent four million guilders to create what was then an unparalleled film palace, replacing a cluster of slummy buildings known as the Duvelshoek.
