The Concertgebouw is defined by its monumental neoclassical facade, topped by a gilded statue of Apollo’s lyre. This hall opened in eighteen eighty-eight to provide Amsterdam with a world-class venue, fulfilling a dream of six prominent citizens who felt the city’s musical life was lacking. Its architect, Adolf Leonard van Gendt, had no formal musical training, yet he successfully modeled his design after the Neue Gewandhaus in Leipzig to create a space of near-mythical acoustic perfection.
