The Rembrandt Monument stands as a cast-iron figure in the center of the square that bears the painter's name. Created by sculptor Louis Royer and unveiled in eighteen fifty-two, it holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving statue in a public space in Amsterdam. The monument depicts Rembrandt van Rijn, who lived nearby for nearly two decades, looking out over the city he once called home.
