The Dokwerker is a bronze sculpture of a resolute, broad-shouldered man standing firmly in the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein. Created by the Dutch sculptor Mari Andriessen and unveiled by Queen Juliana on December first, nineteen fifty-two, the statue honors the workers of Amsterdam who took to the streets on February twenty-fifth, nineteen forty-one. These citizens, including dockworkers and tram drivers, organized a general strike to protest the brutal Nazi raids and the persecution of the city’s Jewish community.
