Homomonument

cultural

The Homomonument consists of three interconnected triangles of pink granite set into the Westermarkt square, forming one large triangle that bridges the street and the canal. Unveiled in nineteen eighty-seven, it was the first memorial in the world dedicated to people persecuted for their sexual orientation. Its design, by artist Karin Daan, uses the shape of the pink triangles that homosexual prisoners were once forced to wear in Nazi concentration camps, transforming a badge of hatred into a permanent mark of remembrance.
