Vondelpark is an elongated stretch of greenery characterized by its winding paths, large ponds, and mature trees designed in the English landscape style. It began in eighteen sixty-four when a group of private citizens, led by the businessman Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen, purchased marshy meadowland on the outskirts of the city. These founders hired landscape architect Jan David Zocher to transform the site into a space for riding and strolling. Although it first opened in eighteen sixty-five as the Nieuwe Park, it earned its current name after a prominent bronze statue of the seventeenth-century poet Joost van den Vondel was placed there in eighteen sixty-seven.
