Huidenstraat, or Hide Street, is one of the nine small historic streets that crisscross Amsterdam’s canal belt. These streets were designed in the early seventeenth century as connecting passages between the major canals of the city. The name of this street preserves a memory of the neighborhood's original purpose: during the Dutch Golden Age, this area served as an industrial hub where tanners and craftsmen worked with animal hides.
