The Trippenhuis on Kloveniersburgwal is a grand, seven-window-wide mansion that reveals its owners’ profession in its very stonework. Built between sixteen sixty and sixteen sixty-two for the brothers Louis and Hendrick Trip, the building features chimney stacks shaped like mortar cannons and military motifs integrated into the stone facade. As wealthy dealers in artillery and munitions, the brothers commanded a significant share of the European arms trade, and they used their fortune to construct what was then the largest residence in Amsterdam.
